Vellaisamy Salon

Vellaisamy Salon is located on Chokanathapuram 2nd Street in the Puthu Vilangudi area of Madurai. It is a quiet street compared to the main roads but we still get plenty of folks walking by. The shop is small and I like it that way because it is easier to keep cool. Madurai heat is no joke, so the fan is always running at full speed. I have one main chair and a smaller one for the kids. The walls are painted a light blue that is starting to fade. I have a small sink in the back for washing hair, though most people just want a dry cut. I spend a lot of time sharpening my straight razor on the leather strap. You can hear the neighbors talking outside and the sound of the pressure cookers from the houses nearby. I know most of the families on this street and have seen the kids grow up. Sometimes they come in just to say hello or get out of the sun for a minute. I keep a bottle of cold water for anyone who looks thirsty. The floor is made of old stone and it stays relatively cool. I don't have a big fancy sign, just the name painted on the door. It is a honest place where you can get a haircut without any fuss. I close up when the sun sets and the street gets dark.
