Nanaban Salon

You can find Nanaban Salon over at 19 Singam Pitari Street in the Thathaneri area of Madurai. We are situated pretty close to Mahaa School, so we end up seeing a lot of students and their parents during the week. The street can be quite narrow, and it has that old Madurai feel that we have grown used to. Our shop is not very large, but we make the most of the space we have inside. There are three chairs and just enough room for a few people to wait their turn. We have been a part of this street for a long time, and we know pretty much all the other shop owners around us. It is a quiet morning routine of opening the shutters and setting out the combs and water sprays. We do not have any high-tech equipment, just the standard stuff that gets the job done for the people who live nearby. Sometimes the power goes out, and we just have to wait it out with the customers, which usually leads to some good stories being told. The school kids are always in a rush to get home, but the older folks like to take their time and sit for a bit. We do not put on any acts here; it is just a place where you come to get cleaned up. The walls have a few old posters, and we keep a small radio playing in the background to fill the silence between haircuts.
