Vidyasagar College

Vidyasagar College is situated right on Beach Road in Kozhikode, so we get that salty air coming in through the windows most of the time. It’s 673001, and being near the water means it stays pretty humid inside. The building has been here for quite some time, and you can see the wear on the floorboards and the window frames. Students tend to linger near the entrance because the breeze is better there than inside the classrooms. We have a lot of old wooden benches that have been sat on by generations of people. Our library is a quiet spot, though the ceiling fan makes a clicking sound that never seems to stop. In the office, we’re usually buried under a pile of admission forms or old records that need filing. The staff mostly talks about the weather or the traffic on Calicut Ho when we’re having our tea. It’s a steady kind of life here. We don’t have flashy equipment, just the stuff we need to get through the day’s lessons. During the monsoon, the rain hits the roof so loud that we almost have to shout to be heard. But when the sun comes out, you can look out toward the beach and see the people walking by. It’s a nice place to work, even with all the little frustrations of an old building and the heat of the coast.
