Tulaasi Big Bazaars (P) Ltd. is tucked away on Bakultala Lane in Kasba. Even though the name sounds like we should be in a giant mall, we are actually in a pretty tight spot. The lane is narrow, so when the supply trucks come, it’s a whole ordeal getting them parked without blocking everyone else. I’ve been working here for a few years now. Kasba is a very busy part of the city, and there’s always something happening outside on the street. Inside the shop, it’s mostly just the sound of the fans and people asking where the rice is kept. I try to keep the shelves stocked, but sometimes things sell out faster than I can reorder them from the warehouse. My boss is a bit of a stickler for keeping the floor clean, so I spend a lot of time with a broom in my hand. It’s a lot of physical work, especially when the big bags of grains arrive. We have a small office in the back where the fan barely works, and that’s where all the bills get sorted out. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s steady. I like the people who live in Bakultala Lane; they are mostly friendly and don’t mind waiting a bit if the line gets long. Sometimes we run out of change and have to go to the shop next door to break a big note. It’s just how things work.
