Ezra Street is always a mess of people and carts. We are right there on the ground floor of number 9. It’s been our spot for a long time now. Some days the traffic outside is so loud you can’t hear yourself think, but that is just how this part of the city is. My father started things here, and now we just keep it going day by day. There are boxes stacked up in the corners that have been there forever. We don't have fancy lights or a big sign, just the name on the door. People know where to find us if they need something. Most of the time, we are just sorting through papers or talking to the delivery guys who manage to squeeze their trucks into the lane. It gets dusty, and the ceiling fan makes a clicking noise that we stopped noticing years ago. It’s not a shiny office like the ones you see in the new parts of town. We have a small stove in the back for making tea, and that’s usually where we spend our breaks. Sometimes the neighbors from the next building come by to complain about the heat or the rain. It’s a simple life here at Desai & Sons. We don't try to be anything we aren't. Just a family business trying to get the work done before the sun goes down and the street gets even more crowded. It’s not always easy, but it’s our life and we’re used to the noise by now.
