You can find us over at 17A, Ratan Sarkar Garden Street. It’s right in that busy part of Kolkata where everything is always moving. Sikaria Rice Products has been handling rice for a long time. It’s not a glamorous job. There is dust, heavy bags, and a lot of talking to people about grain quality. The 700007 area is packed with traders, so it’s always loud outside. We have a small office where we manage the paperwork. Dealing with rice means you’re always thinking about the harvest and the transport. Sometimes the trucks are late and it gets frustrating. We don’t have any fancy posters or a big marketing team. It’s just us and the rice. We spend our days checking ledgers and making sure the orders are going out to where they need to go, whether that's locally or towards Hooghly. The building is an old one, typical for this part of the city. We have a few chairs for guests but they’re usually covered in papers. It’s a simple life. We drink a lot of chai and talk about the markets. It’s a lot of physical work and mental tracking. We just try to get through the list every day. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy from morning until late evening. It is just how things go around here.
