If you walk down Ustad Enayet Khan Avenue on Karaya Road, you’ll see our place at No. 24/4. It’s a busy street, so there is always a lot of noise coming from the traffic outside. We deal with a lot of leather here, so the first thing you notice when you walk in is that heavy, earthy smell. It stays on your clothes even after you go home. We spend most of our mornings unpacking raw materials and checking the quality of the hides. It’s a messy job sometimes. There are pieces of leather everywhere, and the cutting tools are always in use. We have a small corner where we do all the paperwork, but mostly we are on our feet moving things around. The export side of things involves a lot of big wooden crates and heavy tape. We try to stay organized, but when three orders need to go out at once, the whole floor gets cluttered. My brother and I started this because we knew the trade, not because we wanted to sit in an office. The walls could use a new coat of paint, and the ceiling fan makes a clicking sound that we’ve just gotten used to. We get locals stopping by to ask for directions quite often because the street layout is a bit confusing. We don’t mind. It’s just part of being in this neighborhood. We keep the gate open for air.
