Mahamaya Stores

I’ve been working at Mahamaya Stores here on Garia Garden Road for quite a long time now. People in Kolkata know this part of the city gets busy, especially in the mornings when everyone is out looking for their daily supplies. We opened up at this spot because it’s easy for folks living nearby to just drop in. Usually, it's me or one of the other family members behind the counter. The shelves are mostly filled with things people need every day like rice, pulses, and some snacks for the kids. Sometimes the stock gets a bit messy when we get a big delivery, but we try to straighten it out before the evening crowd hits. It’s not a fancy place by any means. We’ve got some old fans that make a bit of noise, and the lighting could be brighter, I suppose. But it works for what we do. Neighbors come in not just to buy stuff but sometimes just to say hello or talk about the weather. We know most of the people who walk through that door by name. If someone is short a few rupees, we usually tell them to just bring it next time. That’s just how things go around here. We try to keep things simple. Running a shop in this part of town isn't always easy with the traffic outside, but we manage. We’re just here doing our job and making sure the local pantry stays full. Most days the shutters go up at seven and stay that way until late.
