Maaps Leather

Our workshop is at No. 51/c in the R. P. C Block of Kazi Para, which is part of the C. R. Colony in Baghajatin. It is a bit of a walk from the main station but it’s a good spot. Maaps Leather is where we spend all our hours. The smell of raw leather is the first thing you notice when you walk in. We have various hides stacked in the corners, waiting to be cut. We use these old heavy shears and sewing machines that make a lot of noise. It’s a bit of a messy process with bits of leather and thread all over the floor. We try to sweep up every evening but by next morning it’s the same again. We make bags and belts and other small items. Sometimes we get a big order and have to stay late under the tube lights. The rain in Kolkata can be a problem because we have to make sure the leather doesn't get damp. We have some plastic sheets we use to cover the windows when it pours. It’s just a few of us working here. We don't have a showroom or anything. If people want to see our work, they just come to the workshop and we show them what is currently on the benches. It’s honest work and my hands are usually stained with dye by the end of the day. We’ve been in this colony for years and know everyone on the street.
