Maa Kali Variety Stores

If you walk down M B Road in Birati, you will find Maa Kali Variety Stores. It is a humble shop where we try to keep a little bit of everything. We have been here in this part of Kolkata for quite some time. The road gets very busy during the morning markets, and that’s when we are the most active. We sell things like plastic buckets, small kitchen tools, and all sorts of packaged foods. It’s a variety store in the true sense because you never know what someone might ask for. One person wants a light bulb and the next wants a packet of spices. We have to keep a good memory for where everything is hidden. The shop isn't modern by any means. We still use the old wooden drawers for some of the smaller items. My son helps me out on the weekends when he isn't busy with his own things. We have a lot of regular customers from the nearby apartments who have been coming to us for years. They like that they can just walk in and find what they need. Sometimes the stock gets a bit low before the next delivery comes, but we always manage to find an alternative. It’s just a regular local shop trying to serve the Birati community as best as we can every day. We don't mind the long hours.
