Leather Age is based at 8-B, Padma Pukur Road. If you walk down this street, you can usually smell the leather before you even see our sign. It’s a distinct scent that stays with you all day. The building we are in is quite old and has these narrow stairs that are a bit of a challenge when we’re carrying heavy rolls of hide. We work with various types of leather, mostly for export and some local use. The workshop floor is always covered in scraps and trimmings. It’s a messy process, but that’s just how leather work is. We have a few machines that have been running for decades, and they still do a better job than the new stuff. Padma Pukur Road is a busy place with a lot of history. There are families living right next to the shops, so you see kids playing and people going about their grocery shopping while we work. We don't have a fancy website or a PR person. We just focus on the material and making sure the cuts are right. Sometimes the rain gets quite heavy and we have to move everything away from the windows so it doesn't get ruined. It’s a hands-on job and we get our hands dirty every single day. We don’t really mind it though. It’s a living, and it keeps us busy from morning until the sun goes down.
