Khirshra High School is located at 3A, Baishnabghata Bye Lane, which is over in the Naktala area of Kolkata. Being in a bye lane means we’re a little bit away from the heaviest traffic, but it’s still a very busy part of town. This is a high school, so we deal with the older kids who are starting to worry about their big board exams and what they’re going to do after they finish. The building has that typical Kolkata look, with several floors and narrow corridors that get pretty crowded during the break times. We have a lot of students coming from the surrounding residential blocks of Naktala and Baishnabghata. The teachers have their hands full with the syllabus, and you’ll often find them staying late to sort through piles of homework or marking papers. It’s not a polished private institution with air conditioning; it’s a regular school with fans spinning fast in the heat and students chatting in the hallways. We have a small area for bicycles because that’s how a lot of the older boys and girls get around here. The atmosphere is generally quite serious when exam season rolls around, but otherwise, it’s just the usual school chaos. People in the neighborhood know us well since the school has been sitting in this lane for a long time, and we just keep going day after day with the same routine of lessons and exams.
