Khadakwasla English School

You can find Khadakwasla English School right along Diamond Harbour Road. It’s a busy part of Behala, so there is always noise from the buses and cars outside. We teach in English here, which is what many parents in this part of Kolkata are looking for these days. The school sits at 350/1, and it’s easy to miss if you aren't looking for the sign. We aren't a massive institution with a huge campus. Instead, it’s more of a tight-knit place. The classrooms are filled with desks and posters the kids made. Some days the hallway is a mess with bags and umbrellas, especially during the monsoon. Our staff lives nearby, so we know the local families and the problems they face. It's not about being the most modern school in the city. We just want the kids to understand their lessons and be able to speak English well enough for their future. Sometimes we run out of chalk or a lightbulb flickers, but we fix it when we can. The kids are mostly from the surrounding blocks. They walk here or come by rickshaw. During the winter, it’s nice because the sun hits the front of the building. We spend most of our time just getting through the syllabus and making sure the homework is done. It’s hard work, but seeing the children grow up over the years makes it worth the effort. It’s a plain building but we call it home most days. We don't have a lot of extras, just the essentials.
