Am Leather

If you know Keshab Chandra Sen Street, you know it’s always crowded and full of life. Am Leather is tucked away at No. 168/p, and we’ve been here long enough that we don’t even notice the noise outside anymore. The building is old, like most things in this part of town, but it has a lot of character. We spend our days surrounded by the smell of raw leather. It’s a strong scent that stays on your clothes long after you leave. We deal with different types of skins and hides, mostly for manufacturers who need specific grades. It isn't a clean, modern office with glass walls. It’s a working space with stacks of material reaching the ceiling. Sometimes it’s hard to find a place to sit because every surface is covered in tools or scraps. We have a few regular guys who come in to help with the heavy lifting. The lighting isn't the best, so we do most of our color checking near the front window during the day. It’s a practical business. We don't have a website that we update or anything like that. Most people find us through word of mouth or just by walking down the street. We just try to keep the stock moving and treat people fairly when they come in. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s what we know. We close up when the sun goes down and start again the next morning.
