Down at No. 31 Elliot Road the air usually smells like leather and polish. That is where we do our work every day. It is an old street and the building has a lot of character even if the walls could use a bit of paint. We have been working with leather for a long time now. Our worktables are scarred from years of cutting and stitching different pieces. It is not a clean shiny office environment. There are hides stacked in the corners and scraps of leather on the floor. We spend our hours measuring and cutting and making sure things are put together right. Sometimes the local traffic on Elliot Road gets so bad we can hardly hear ourselves talk but we just keep going. People often drop by just to see what we are making. We do not do much advertising because we stay busy enough with the work on our hands. The tools we use are simple but they get the job done properly. It is just a few of us here working away through the day. We have our routines like the morning tea and the way we shut the heavy doors at night. It is a quiet kind of life even with the city noise outside. We just focus on the material and the craft of putting things together. That is enough for us and it keeps the business moving along.
