We operate out of Asian House. It’s our main base for everything leather. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is the smell of the hides. It’s a strong scent, but we’re all used to it by now. We spend our days sorting through different grades of leather and figuring out which ones are good enough to use for the orders. It’s a lot of standing on your feet and checking for marks or scratches on the skins. We don't have a lot of bells and whistles here. The desks are old and the lighting could be better, but it’s where we do our work. We’ve been handling leather for a long time. It’s a tricky material because every piece is different. You can't just treat it all the same. Sometimes a batch comes in and it’s not what we expected, so we have to spend extra time fixing things. We have a few machines for cutting and thinning, but a lot of the sorting is done by eye. It takes a while to get the hang of it. We aren't a corporate office with suits; most of us wear old clothes because leather work is dirty. We just try to keep the orders moving so nothing sits around for too long. It's a steady pace most weeks and we just keep our heads down and work.
