Our place is at No. 70/ D on Abhinash Chandra Banerjee Lane in Beliaghata. If you’ve ever been to this part of town, you know it has a very specific feel to it. The lanes are narrow, and there’s a lot of history in the buildings around here. Kanungoe Leathers Pvt. Ltd. has been part of this neighborhood for quite a while. We work with leather, so there’s always that strong smell of hides and tanning when you walk through our doors. It’s not a smell everyone likes, but for us, it’s just the smell of work. Our building is an older one, with thick walls and high ceilings, which helps keep it a bit cooler during the hot Kolkata summers. We spend our days grading leather, cutting pieces, and checking the quality of the skins. It’s a dusty job and your hands get dirty pretty fast. We have a small office tucked in the corner where the account books are kept, but most of the action happens on the floor. Beliaghata is known for leather work, so we are surrounded by people who do similar things. We aren't trying to change the world; we just want to produce leather that people can actually use for their products. It’s a lot of manual labor and staying late to finish a batch. We usually walk to the main road for tea in the evenings just to stretch our legs.
