Star Leather

You can find us out at Plot No-45 in the Leather Complex, Zone-1. This is the Bantala area, so it’s quite a distance from the main city center of Kolkata. Out here, everything is about leather. You can smell it in the air the moment you turn off the main road. Our space is basically a big workshop where we handle raw hides and finished pieces. It’s a messy job sometimes. There’s water on the floor in some parts and heavy machines thumping in others. We wear boots because of the spills. It’s not a place for clean shoes or white shirts. We spend our days moving heavy stacks of material from one side of the plot to the other. The sun beats down on the roof during the summer, making it pretty warm inside, but we’re used to it by now. We have a small area in the front where we keep the records and talk to the truck drivers who come to pick up the loads. There are a lot of other units around us doing similar work, so it feels like a real industrial hub. We don’t have a fancy showroom. Most of what we do is just heavy lifting and processing. It’s hard work, and our hands get pretty rough from handling the skins all day. But it’s what we know how to do. We usually wrap things up before the last truck leaves for the night.
