Baba Bardhamaneswar Oils Private Limited operates out of a flat in the Nirmal Enclave building. It is right on Tollygunge Road in Kolkata. Living and working in the same area means we are always around. We deal with different types of oils and it gets pretty busy on the 2nd floor. Moving crates up and down the stairs is basically our workout for the day. Tollygunge is a crowded part of the city, so there is always noise from the street coming through the windows. We spend our mornings checking on stock and making sure the labels are stuck on straight. Sometimes the printer jams or we run out of tape, and someone has to run out to the local market. It is not a shiny corporate office with glass walls. It is a home-turned-office where we keep our files and samples. We have been here for a while now and the neighbors know us. Dealing with edible oils means everything has to stay clean, even if the office looks a bit cluttered with papers. We eat our lunch together at the main table and talk about the day’s tasks. Traffic on Tollygunge Road can be a nightmare for deliveries, so we have to plan everything early. It is just a handful of us trying to make the business work. We don't use big words or have fancy meetings. We just get the oil where it needs to go.
