Adya Maa Stores

Living near Lichu Bagan in Sodepur has its own rhythm. Adya Maa Stores is tucked away on Subhash Road, and we have been serving this part of Kolkata for a while now. The rain here can be quite something, and when it pours, people often duck into the shop to wait it out. While they wait, they might pick up some tea leaves or a packet of rusks. We try to keep things organized, but on busy days, it gets a bit messy with boxes piled up near the entrance. The street outside is usually full of people walking towards the station or heading home. We see the same faces every day, which is nice. Sometimes we run out of things people want, like a specific brand of mustard oil, and we have to tell them to come back tomorrow after the delivery truck arrives. The shop is small and the shelves go all the way up to the ceiling, so we have to use a little wooden stool to reach the top items. It gets quite humid, so the newspapers on the counter always feel a bit damp. We don’t do anything special here, just sell the basic things people need for their homes. It is a quiet existence, mostly spent weighing out pulses or counting out small change for the local kids. We are just glad to be here on Subhash Road doing our bit.
