Our place is located at 8 Bolai Dutta Street. It’s an old building, but it works for what we do with leather. The street itself is always moving, lots of trucks and carts going by all day. Inside, it smells like raw hides and the chemicals we use for tanning. It’s not a smell everyone likes, but we’re used to it. We spend the morning checking the batches that came in late the night before. Sometimes the water is a bit slow or the machines act up, but we manage. Most of the guys have been working here for years. They know the leather just by touching it. We don't have a fancy office or anything like that. Just some desks and a lot of floor space for the skins. If you come by, you’ll see stacks of leather everywhere waiting to be moved. It’s noisy because of the fans and the drums turning. We just keep our heads down and get the work done. The street outside is narrow, so getting deliveries in and out takes some patience. We usually have tea around four o’clock and talk about the day's progress. It’s a messy business, leather, but it’s what we know. We try to keep the quality steady even when the weather gets too humid or dry. It’s just us doing our thing on Bolai Dutta Street every day.
