Way out in Kalyanpur, you will find the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. It is quite far from the main city of Kanpur, which means it is a world of its own. The campus is very flat and spread out. One of the first things people notice is how many bicycles there are. Almost everyone uses them to get to class or the mess. We even have our own small airstrip on the grounds. It is a very quiet place, especially in the evenings when the sun starts to set over the fields. The winters here are quite harsh. You see everyone wrapped up in heavy woolens heading to the lecture halls. The buildings are mostly functional, made of brick and concrete. It is not a place for luxury. Most of us live here, so you see the same faces at the grocery store or the library. The students are usually busy with their projects, and the labs stay open at odd hours. We have a lot of trees and open spaces where you can just sit. It’s an environment that forces you to focus because there isn't much else to do in Kalyanpur. We don't have big signs or flashy entrances. It’s just a place where serious work happens. Everyone knows their way around the various blocks and hostels. It’s a tight-knit community that has been here for decades, just doing our thing in this corner of Uttar Pradesh.
