Classic Handmade Paper Ind.

Our place is out on Malpura Road in Sanganer, not too far from the Sawai Madhopur Railway Bridge. You can hear the trains passing by quite often. We make handmade paper here, which is a slow and wet process. We have large vats of pulp and screens where we lift the sheets out one by one. It takes a lot of water and a lot of drying time. In the rainy season, everything slows down because the paper just won't dry properly. We use old methods, mostly cotton scraps and other natural materials to get the texture right. The workshop is usually filled with stacks of drying sheets and the sound of the pulping machine. Sanganer is known for this kind of work, so we fit right in with the local tradition. We have a few rooms where we store the finished paper and some where we do the cutting and packing. It’s not a high-tech factory. Most of it is done by hand, and you can see the imperfections in the paper, which is the whole point. The workers here have been doing this for a long time, and they have a rhythm to it. We don’t spend much time on marketing or fancy packaging. We just make the paper and send it out to whoever needs it. It’s a simple life, mostly dictated by the weather and the drying racks. We hope the sun stays out so we can finish the current batch before the rains come again.
