Down in Village Lunghuchandel, in the Chandel sub-division, you will find Cmmm Organic Farmers Producer Company. Y. Appollo Chothe is the one who looks after the main office stuff here. We decided to focus on organic farming because that is how our grandparents used to do it before all the chemicals became common. It’s a slower way of growing things, and it can be a real headache when the pests come around, but we think it is better for the land. Our soil in Lunghuchandel is good, and we want to keep it that way for the next generation. We are a small group of farmers from the village and the surrounding hills. We don't have any big corporate backing or fancy machines. Mostly it’s just us with our hoes and our hands. We get together to talk about compost and natural ways to keep the plants healthy. It’s not always easy to convince people that organic is the way to go, but we are sticking to it. The company helps us find people who actually want to buy what we grow. It’s a lot of physical labor and we often go home tired and covered in dirt. But there is a certain pride in knowing we didn't put anything strange into the ground. We are just local people growing food the old-fashioned way and trying to make it work. Every year we learn something new about the soil and the plants we grow.
