Sushila Engineering Works

Sushila Engineering Works is tucked away at Plot No. 32 on Bhairab Dutta Lane in Salkia. We’re quite close to Ramlal Mukherjee Lane, which is how most people find us in these narrow streets. Our workshop is a bit noisy because of the machines. We do a lot of metalwork and repairs here. It’s not a clean place, there are metal shavings on the floor and oil on the workbenches. But it’s a productive place. We’ve got a couple of lathes and some welding equipment that have been with us for years. The neighborhood is crowded, and getting a truck down the lane can be a real challenge sometimes. We usually have to help guide them in so they don't hit anything. We don’t have a front office or a receptionist. If you want to talk to us, you just walk into the shop and shout over the noise. We’re just a small group of guys who like working with our hands. We take on all sorts of small jobs that the big factories won’t touch. It’s steady work. Sometimes we’re busy until late at night, and the sparks from the grinder are the only light in the lane. It’s just a regular engineering shop doing what needs to be done. We don't make a big deal out of it. There is always a cup of tea sitting on a workbench somewhere and the sound of metal hitting metal all day.
