About Rose Island Engineering Works – Engineering in Howrah
Rose Island Engineering Works is tucked away at 39 Mirpara Lane in Salkia. If you know Salkia, you know the lanes are narrow and always full of people and rickshaws. It’s a bit of a squeeze getting materials in and out sometimes, but we’ve made it work for years. Our workshop isn't very large, but we utilize every inch of space we have. There’s a lot of history in this neighborhood, and you can feel it in the old buildings around us. We mostly handle small to medium engineering jobs. It’s the kind of place where you can hear the hammers and the grinders from down the street. We don’t have a big sign or anything flashy out front. The guys who work here live nearby, so they just walk or cycle in every morning. We start early before it gets too hot. Most of the work is manual, requiring a lot of focus and steady hands. We don’t have a big hierarchy here; everyone just pitches in where they are needed. Sometimes we take a break for tea at the corner shop, which is when we catch up on the local news. It’s a very local operation. We don’t aim to be the biggest, just to stay busy and keep the machines running. It’s a lot of sweat and effort, but that’s the nature of engineering in a place like this. We just keep plugging away at it day after day. Sometimes the rain floods the lane, but we just keep the doors high.
