Our office is in a village called Deorah, which is near Sasati in the Howrah district of West Bengal. It is a quiet place, quite far from the noise and smoke of the city. Being contractors and engineers, we spend a lot of our time out on various project sites, but this village office is where we keep all our records and plan things out. The air is a bit fresher here than in central Howrah. We have been working in the construction line for a long time. It involves a lot of managing labor and making sure materials like cement and steel arrive on time, which can be a real challenge on some of these narrow rural roads. Our building is simple and does not look like much from the outside. Inside, it is mostly just blueprints, ledgers, and a few old computers. We prefer it that way because it is functional. Most of the people working here are locals from the nearby villages. We know the land well. Engineering in a rural setting has its own set of problems, like frequent power cuts or transport issues during the rainy season when the rivers start to rise. But we have lived through many seasons here and we just get on with it. There is always another road to build or a small structure to plan. It is not glamorous work, but it is what we do for a living. Deorah is our home base.
