Sarai Chhabila is where we are. It’s a quiet spot in Bulandshahr. Jogendra Singh has a place here, house number 623, and that’s basically our headquarters. We aren’t some big corporation with suits. We are just a group of farmers who decided to call ourselves Maisonasarai Farmer Producer Company. It sounds official, but mostly it’s just us meeting under the tree or in the front room. We grow what we can. The soil here is decent, but you have to work it hard. We deal with the usual stuff like seeds, manure, and trying to find a truck that doesn't break down halfway to the market. Some people in the village were skeptical at first. They thought it was just more paperwork for nothing. But we’ve managed to stay afloat. It’s not a glamorous life. My hands are usually dirty and my boots are never clean. We don't have a marketing department. We just talk to neighbors. If the crop is good, we’re happy. If not, we figure out what to do next season. There’s no secret formula. Just waking up early and staying out late. We share the costs and we share the risks. That was the whole point of setting this up. It’s better than being on your own when the prices drop. We’re just trying to make a living in Sarai Chhabila like everyone else. It's just us and the land, and that's usually enough to keep us busy from sunrise to sunset.
