Shital Hair Cutting Saloon is right on the Main Road in Jharia, which is part of Dhanbad. This area, Phularibad, is always covered in a bit of dust because of all the coal and trucks moving around. I spend a lot of my morning just dusting off the chairs and the glass shelf where I keep the razors. The shop is right in the middle of all the noise. You can hear the trucks shifting gears outside all day long. I opened this place because I wanted to work for myself. It’s a small room with a high ceiling. I keep a few newspapers on a stool for people to read while they wait their turn. Most of the men who come in are working in the nearby mines or offices. They don’t want anything fancy, just a quick cut so they can get back to their day. I use a simple black apron for the customers and I keep my scissors sharpened every week. Dhanbad can get really hot and humid, so I have a big standing fan that helps a bit. The walls are painted a light color, but they get stained over time, so I try to touch them up when I can. It is a practical shop for practical people. Jharia is a tough place to work sometimes, but having a steady spot on the Main Road helps keep things moving. I usually eat my lunch right here behind the counter when it is quiet.
