Horen Hair Cutting Saloon is in Bartand, which is right near the main bus stand in Dhanbad. This means we get a lot of people who are just passing through the city. They come in with their bags and look tired from their travels, wanting a quick shave or a haircut before they move on to their next destination. Because we are near the bus stand, I open the shop very early in the morning. The sound of the buses honking is like an alarm clock for me. The shop itself is quite old. The paint is peeling a little bit in the corners, and the mirrors have a few scratches, but they still show you what you need to see. I keep a plastic jug of water and some glasses for anyone who is thirsty. Dhanbad is a busy, industrial town, and you can feel that energy here in Bartand. I have a lot of regular customers too, men who live in the neighborhood and have been coming to me for years. We discuss the local news and the bus schedules. I don’t use any expensive creams or lotions. I just use what works and what people are used to. It’s a busy life, always seeing new faces and saying goodbye to them an hour later. I like being right here where all the action is near the station. Sometimes the diesel smell from the buses comes inside, but we are used to it.
