Cooch Behar Farmers Producer Companylimited. We are based in Mahish Bathan. Basudeb Sutradhar and his father Banchha Ram Sutradhar are the ones who started things off here at their place. It’s a very local operation through and through. We’ve got a group of farmers from around the Cooch Behar area who all work together. Farming is tough when you’re on your own, so we decided to pool our resources. We meet up at Mahish Bathan to talk about the harvest and what we’re going to do for the next season. It’s a lot of conversation about prices, pests, and the quality of the soil. We don’t have a fancy office with air conditioning. It’s just a room with some benches and a lot of registers that we fill out by hand. We spend most of our time out on the land anyway. The people here have been farming for generations, so there is a lot of old knowledge mixed with new ideas. We try to help the younger guys get started too. It’s a slow process but we’re making progress. We handle everything from getting seeds to finding people to buy the final product. It’s a lot of responsibility but it’s better than being at the mercy of the big markets. We’re just a group of hardworking folks in Mahish Bathan trying to make a living from the earth. That is pretty much our story.
