We are right on the main road, so we get a lot of people stopping their bikes to pick up something quickly on their way home. We sell all the basics you would expect like rice, sugar, oils, and plenty of snacks. The Chennai humidity is quite something, so we have to make sure the grains are stored properly so they don't get spoiled. We have a couple of ceiling fans that work hard all day. The shop isn't very big, but we have managed to fit a lot of shelves in. I spend my time talking to customers about the local news or the weather. Most of them are regulars who have been coming here for a decade or more. We don't have a fancy billing system. I just calculate everything on a small calculator and give the change. It’s a simple way to work. We don't do any big promotions. We just open the doors at seven in the morning and wait for the milk delivery. The evening time is the busiest when everyone is coming back from work. We just keep our heads down and do the work. It’s a good neighborhood to be in and we are happy to be part of it.
