Jayam Provision Store

Our shop is tucked away on Pilliyar Koil Street in Jalladiyanpettai. It’s a residential area, so we mostly see the same people every day. Being near Asan College means we also get students coming in for snacks or things they forgot to buy for their rooms. We are at No 142, and it’s a fairly straightforward setup. We keep bags of rice, dals, soaps, and all the basic groceries that a kitchen needs. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze sometimes when we get a big delivery and have to stack everything up. My son helps me with the heavy lifting and keeping the accounts in order. It’s not a supermarket or anything like that, just a local provision store where you can ask for exactly how much you want. The mornings are usually quiet until the milk arrives, and then things pick up. We spend most of our day weighing items and chatting with the neighbors about what’s happening in Pallikaranai. It’s a long day, starting early and closing late, but it’s what we do. We try to make sure we don’t run out of the basics because people rely on us when they’re cooking dinner and realize they’re out of salt or oil. It’s just a small family-run business trying to stay useful to the street and the people living around here.
