You will find Haridoss Stores right on Kodambakkam High Road, near Gandhi Nagar in Ennore. It’s a small place but we pack a lot into it. The shelves are pretty cramped with all sorts of household things, from snacks to plastic buckets. Being in Ennore means we get a lot of local workers stopping by after their shifts. The sea breeze sometimes makes things a bit salty, so we have to wipe down the glass jars quite often. My father started this place, and not much has changed since then, except maybe the brands of biscuits we sell. We have a small bench outside where some of the older men sit and talk in the evenings. It’s not a quiet job, that’s for sure. There is always a delivery truck unloading something or a customer asking for change. We use old-fashioned notebooks for some of our records because it’s just easier than the computer sometimes. The lighting inside isn't the brightest, but we know where every single item is hidden. Sometimes a stray dog comes in to hide from the sun and we have to shoo it out gently. It’s just us here every day, opening the locks at eight and staying until the streetlights come on. We don't have a big team, just a couple of us making sure people get what they need for their homes without waiting too long.
