Amman Stores is sitting at 95/56 on Karukku Main Road in Ambattur. We’re right on the busy road, so there’s always noise from the buses and bikes going past. It’s a local shop where we sell all the usual things people need for their homes. We’ve been here for years, and the building shows its age a bit. The paint is peeling in some corners, and the shelves are made of old wood that we put up ourselves. We don’t have any big shopping carts, just small baskets for people to use. It’s usually just one or two of us behind the counter. We know the names of most of the families who live on the side streets. During the monsoon, the rain splashes in through the front, so we have to move the grain bags further back. It’s a lot of work keeping everything clean because of the exhaust from the traffic outside. We don’t have a computer for the bills; we still use a pen and a paper pad. It feels more personal that way. We stay open pretty late because people often realize they forgot something for dinner and run over at the last minute. It’s just a small, honest shop for the neighborhood. We do our best to keep the shelves stocked and the prices fair without making a big deal out of it. People just know us and stop by. We enjoy the daily grind and seeing our regulars walk through the door.
