Our name is a bit of a mouthful, Shaswatniti Jaivik Sheti Mission Farmerproducer Company Limited, but we’re a lot simpler than that sounds. We’re based out of Warwat - Bakal in the Sangrampur area, usually meeting at M. D. Paliwal’s place. We’re in the Buldhana district, and our main focus is on jaivik, or organic, farming because we wanted to get back to the way things used to be done before everything got so complicated with chemicals. It’s not always easy, and sometimes our yields aren't as high as the neighbors', but we feel better about what we’re growing. We aren't some big environmental organization; we’re just local farmers who think this is a better way to treat our soil for the long run. We don't have a lot of fancy equipment or a big warehouse. Mostly, it’s just a few of us sitting around on Paliwal’s porch, talking about compost or how to deal with pests without spending a fortune. It’s slow work and it takes a lot of patience. Sometimes the weather in Buldhana doesn’t cooperate, and we lose a lot, but that’s the risk we take. We’re just a small mission of farmers trying to keep our land healthy so our kids might actually want to keep farming it. No big promises, just a lot of dirt under our fingernails and a hope that we’re doing something that makes sense for our village.
