Sri Rajalakshmi Sweets

If you walk down Ejipura Main Road in Marthahalli, you’ll find us easily enough. Sri Rajalakshmi Sweets has been here for a good while, and we’ve become a regular stop for folks living nearby. Every day is pretty much the same routine. We start early, getting the milk boiling and the sugar ready for the different batches. The kitchen is right there, and you can usually hear the sound of the scrapers on the pans if you’re standing at the counter. We don't have a lot of fancy decorations, just the glass cases where we put out the fresh stuff every morning. Some days the jalebis are the first to go, and other days it’s the savory snacks. It really depends on the mood of the neighborhood, I guess. I spend a lot of time wrapping things up in paper or plastic containers and counting out change. The floor gets a bit sticky by the afternoon, no matter how much we clean it, because of all the syrup. We have a few benches if people want to sit, but most just grab their bags and head out. It’s a busy road, so there’s always a bit of dust and noise from the buses going by. We just focus on keeping the trays full and making sure nothing stays on the shelf for too long. It’s hard work, but we’re used to the long hours by now. Sometimes we have to stay late to finish a big batch of laddoos.
