Snow City

We’ve been here on Rayamahal Road in J C Nagar for a while now. It’s funny because when you walk in from the hot street, it’s like a different world. Most of us who work here at Snow City spend our whole shift in heavy jackets, even when it’s boiling outside in Rabrindranath Tagore Nagar. There is a lot of work involved in keeping things cold enough for the snow to stay real, but that’s just what we do every day. We see all kinds of people coming through the doors. Some are kids who have never seen actual ice before, and others are just looking to get out of the Bangalore sun for an hour or two. The gear we give out—the boots and the big coats—gets used a lot, so we spend a good chunk of our time just sorting through those and making sure everything is dry for the next person. Usually it gets pretty loud in here with the music and people sliding around, but you get used to it. Sometimes the machinery is a bit noisy too. We just keep our heads down and make sure the slides are clear and the snow is piled up right. Being in the cold all day while the city is sweating makes for a strange job, but it beats sitting in an office. People usually leave looking a bit shivering but happy they came. There is a lot of maintenance but we have a system that mostly works for us.
