Santhanam Sweets & Savouries

Shivaji Nagar is a crowded part of town, and Narayana Pillai Street is right in the thick of it all. We are located at number 294. This shop has been around for a long time, and you can usually smell the sugar syrup from a block away. We start the work very early in the morning because the sweets and the snacks need time to cool down and set properly. There isn't any secret to what we do, it is just a lot of manual work, stirring big pots and watching the temperatures. My hands are usually covered in flour or grease by the time most people are just waking up. We don't bother with fancy signs or big advertisements. People just know where we are because their parents used to bring them here when they were little. It gets very hot near the stoves, especially in the summer, so we keep the fans running all day long. We keep the glass counters wiped down and fill up the trays with whatever we managed to finish making that morning. Sometimes we run out of the popular stuff by mid-afternoon, and we just have to tell people to come back tomorrow. We don't use fancy computers for the billing, just a pad of paper and a pen. It is a bit of a chaotic place when the market is in full swing, but we like the energy of the street.
