Mahalakshmi Sweets

If you know Chickpet, you know how crowded R T Street can get. We are right there at number 12, on the 5th Cross. Mahalakshmi Sweets has been in this spot for quite a long time. The shop is old, and the shelves are made of heavy wood. We don't have fancy glass displays like the new shops in the malls. We just stack the trays of sweets as they come out of the kitchen. It’s always a bit noisy with the traffic and the people shouting outside. We’ve got a small team of guys who have been with us for years. They know exactly how much sugar and ghee goes into every batch. It’s hard work, especially when the festivals are coming up. Then, we are working through the night to keep the trays full. We don't use any machines; it’s all done by hand. Sometimes the shapes aren't perfectly uniform, but that's just how it is when you make things manually. Customers don't seem to mind. They come for the taste they remember from when they were kids. It’s a cramped space, and you might get bumped by someone else while you're waiting. But that’s just part of being in Chickpet. We just keep our heads down and keep the stoves going. It’s what my father did and what we do now.
