Vijay Engineering is located at 1909 in the 4th Phase of the Gidc Estate. It is a standard industrial unit, much like the others in this section of the estate. We’ve got the usual setup of lathes, milling machines, and stacks of metal rods waiting to be turned into something useful. The floor is always a bit oily, no matter how much we try to sweep it, but that’s just part of running an engineering shop. We have a few windows high up that let in some light, but mostly we rely on the overhead tubes to see what we are doing. The 4th Phase can be a bit chaotic with the narrow roads and all the delivery vans trying to squeeze past each other. We spend a lot of time listening to the hum of the motors and the sharp bite of the cutting tools. Usually, we have a radio playing somewhere in the back to break up the noise of the machines. It’s not a place for sitting around. There’s always a part that needs finishing or a machine that needs a bit of grease. We don't go in for much talk. People come to us when they need something made to a specific size, and we do our best to get it to fit. It's just us here working through the jobs one by one until the day is over and we head home. The work is steady.
