Steward

We work over at Steward, which is set up inside the Fortune Hotel Landmark on Ashram Road in Usmanpura. This part of Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad-13 area, is always bustling with people and cars, especially near the hotel entrance. Our day usually starts pretty early with setting things up and checking the tables and chairs. Being on Ashram Road means there is a lot of noise outside, but once you are in here, it feels a bit different. We aren't doing anything fancy, just the regular work that needs to happen for the hotel to run okay. There is a lot of walking back and forth, and sometimes the shifts feel long when it’s a full house. Most of us have been working here for a bit, so we know where everything is kept in the back rooms. The hotel has its own way of doing things, and we just follow along with the daily list. We spend a lot of time on our feet, making sure the linens are straight and the glasses don't have spots on them. It’s a job where you notice the small things, like a crooked chair or a flickering light in the corner. We don't have a big fancy office, just the workspace we use every day. People come through from all over, and we just stay focused on getting through the afternoon and evening hours until it's time to head home. We have a small corner for our bags and coats behind the main service area.
