Our workshop is located at C-104, Kasturi2, right opposite the Alay Bungalows near Shyamal 3B in the Satellite area of Ahmedabad. Sompura Moorti Art is a place where there is always a bit of dust in the air from the stone and the carving. It’s not a clean, white-walled gallery. It’s a real working space where people are actually making things with their hands. You walk in and you see half-finished statues and pieces of marble everywhere. The neighborhood is a bit more residential and quiet, which is nice, but our spot is always humming with the sound of tools. We spend a lot of time just looking at the details of the work. It’s a craft that takes a lot of patience, and you can’t really rush it. Sometimes the floor is covered in stone chips, and we just sweep them into a pile at the end of the day. It’s a very practical way to spend your time. We have a few benches where we sit and talk to people about what they want. It’s not about having a fancy sales pitch; it’s just about showing them what we are currently working on. The sun hits the courtyard in a certain way in the afternoon, making all the dust sparkle. It’s a bit of a mess, honestly, but that’s what a real art studio looks like. We just focus on the stone and the work itself.
