All India Disaster Mitigation Institute

Our office is tucked away in D/503 at Ratnadeep Towers in C.P. Nagar. If you know Ghatlodia, you know it can get pretty crowded around here. We spend our days at these desks looking over papers and maps. Most of the work at All India Disaster Mitigation Institute is about what happens when things go wrong like floods or storms. It isn't always exciting stuff. There are a lot of meetings and phone calls to different places across the country. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit there talking until it comes back on. We have piles of reports on the shelves that have been there for years. The windows look out over the city and you can hear the traffic from the main road all day long. We aren't a big corporate place with shiny floors. It’s just a group of us trying to figure out how to help people when they lose their homes or crops. Usually, there is some tea going around in the afternoon. We talk about the weather a lot because that’s mostly what our work is based on. It’s a bit cramped with all the files but we make it work. People come in and out with news from different states. We just keep doing what we do every day, sitting here in Ahmedabad, hoping that the plans we make actually help someone when the next big rain comes.
