Varanasi Carpet Exports

We are located in Madhosingh, over in the Jairam Pur area of Aurai. Varanasi Carpet Exports has been part of this community for a long time. Our main focus is on the carpets, obviously. We spend our days surrounded by wool, silk, and big wooden frames. Aurai is famous for this kind of work, so we’re just one of many families doing it. Our workshop is a large, open space to fit the big rugs. It’s not air-conditioned or anything, so it gets quite warm in the summer months. We just open the doors and keep working. The sound of the combs hitting the threads is constant. It’s a labor-heavy job and our hands are usually pretty rough by the end of the week. We don’t really have a showroom. Most of the carpets are rolled up and stacked against the walls once they are finished. We check each one for loose threads before they get sent out. It’s a slow process, making a carpet. Some take weeks, others take months. We don’t try to speed it up because you can’t with hand-knotting. It’s just a regular day-to-day routine for us here in Madhosingh. We eat our lunch together and then get back to the looms. It’s not a glamorous life, but it’s what we know how to do, and we just keep the business running as best we can.
