Chandan Carpets

New Bazar is always a mess of people and carts, and Chandan Carpets is right in the thick of it. We’ve been here since the market was a lot smaller. The shop is small and the ceiling is low, so it feels a bit cramped when there are more than three customers inside. We have rugs folded and piled up on wooden platforms. Sometimes you have to climb over one pile to get to another. It’s not very organized, but we know where everything is. The air smells a bit like wool and old wood. We don’t have air conditioning, so we keep the front door wide open and hope for a breeze. We get a lot of regular customers who come back every few years when they need something new for their house. We don’t use any fancy sales talk. We just tell them what it’s made of and how long it might last. Sometimes we have tea with the neighbors while it’s quiet. The floor is made of old tiles that are cracked in a few places, but they’ve been there for decades. We don't see any reason to change them. It's a place where work gets done and people buy what they need. We close up when the sun goes down and the market starts to quiet down a bit. It’s been this way for a long time and we like the routine of it all. We usually sweep the dust out right before locking the shutters.
