Marutinandan Sweet & Farshan

If you go to Wadi, over at 1st Main, 1st Cross, in the 1st Block, you’ll find us at Marutinandan Sweet & Farshan. We start our day when most people are still sleeping. The big pans get hot and the smell of oil starts filling up the place before the sun is even up. Making farsan is a lot of hard work and it’s very hot standing near the stoves all day. We make the sweets in batches and try to get them into the glass cases before the morning office rush. People stop by to grab a snack for their breakfast or something to take to work. The shop is small and can get pretty crowded during the peak hours. We try to keep up with the demand but sometimes we run out of the popular items by midday. It’s a lot of repetitive movement, frying and draining and packing. Our hands get used to the heat after a while. Wadi is a busy part of town and there’s always something going on outside. We have been here at this cross for a long time. The floor is always a bit slippery despite how much we scrub it because of all the frying. It’s just the nature of the business. We don’t have fancy uniforms or a big marketing plan. We just make the food, put it in the packets, and sell it to whoever comes through the door. It is a simple life of cooking.
