Mahesh Khaman House

Mahesh Khaman House is located in Fatepura Mumbai Central West 1. We are known in the neighborhood for making khaman every single day. The morning starts very early for us because the batter needs time to sit before we steam it. We have these large round trays that go into the steamers. When we take them out, the khaman is bright yellow and very soft. We then cut it into squares and add the tempering of mustard seeds and chilies. The shop is right on the street in Fatepura and it gets busy around eight in the morning. People are on their way to work and they want a quick breakfast. We wrap the portions in newspaper or put them in small boxes for people to take away. There is a lot of steam in the air and it makes the shop feel very warm. We have a small sink in the corner for washing the trays and a bench where people can wait. The Mumbai Central West area is always moving fast and we try to keep up with the pace. We don't have a big menu, just a few things that we know how to make well. The floor is often wet from cleaning the equipment but we try to keep it safe. We’ve been here for a long time and the shop has become a regular part of the morning for many people who live or work around here.
