Jalaram Departmental Store

Jalaram Departmental Store is located at 26, Maruti Apartment in the Karelibaug area of Vadodara. Being near Ambalal Park means we get a lot of people walking by in the evenings. The shop isn't very large, but we try to pack in as much as we can on the shelves. It’s a bit of a puzzle sometimes trying to fit the new detergent boxes next to the snacks. Living and working in Vadodara - 390018 has a certain rhythm to it. We open up and start by sweeping the front step. The Maruti Apartment building is easy to spot, so people don't usually get lost finding us. We aren't a big chain store with uniforms; we just wear our regular clothes and talk to whoever comes in. Most of our customers are people who live in the flats nearby. They come in for bread or milk or whatever they forgot to buy elsewhere. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting heavy bags of rice and counting change. The fans in the ceiling hum all day long to keep the air moving. We don't have a marketing department or big plans for expansion. We just want to make sure the inventory is right and the shop stays clean enough. It’s a straightforward business, and we like it that way. Every day is different depending on who walks through the door near Ambalal Park.
