We are Das Pendawala and we have been operating out of Vadodara 3 for quite a long time now. Our main focus is making pendas and other traditional sweets that people in this area have grown up with. The work starts very early in the morning when the fresh milk arrives at the door. We have to stand over large pots for hours, stirring the mixture as it thickens up to make the base for the sweets. It is hot work and requires a lot of patience and strong arms. The shop in Vadodara 3 isn't very large, so we have to use the space we have very efficiently to get everything done. We spend a lot of time packing sweets into cardboard boxes and weighing them out on the old scales. People come in for a few pieces or for whole kilos depending on what they are celebrating at home. We don't use fancy machines for everything; a lot of it is still done by hand just like it used to be. The floor can get a bit sticky from the sugar syrup, so we are always mopping and cleaning to keep things right. We have a lot of history in this city and we know many of the families around here. It is a traditional kind of business where things don't change very fast. We just keep making the pendas the way we always have and hope the weather stays cool enough. It is a simple, honest way to make a living in Vadodara.
